First Baptist Church of Oxford: A Neighborly Faith
At 150 Pontiac Street in Oxford, Michigan, directly across from the Early Learning Center and the Oxford Library, stands First Baptist Church of Oxford. The location feels perfectly matched to the spirit of the congregation, close to the heart of town and easy for neighbors to find. Pastor Nathan Peloquin has served here for four and a half years, and in that time he has grown deeply attached to the community.
“We love Oxford, we love our community,” he says. His hope is that the church will follow Jesus, help others follow Jesus, and show the love of God in everyday ways. Pastor Nathan describes the mission as simple but meaningful. The congregation wants to be good neighbors, people who live in a way that reflects kindness first so that others might “see ultimately who Jesus is.”
The church grounds play a lively role during Oxford’s parade weekend each year. Floats and groups line up in the parking lot, children run around with excitement, and the congregation hands out hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies. It becomes a warm gathering place even on the coldest days. Pastor Nathan sees it as a chance to connect. “We want to interact with our community, make friends, and be good neighbors.”
Their field also becomes home to the youth football program every summer and fall. Children practice for hours, coaches call out plays, and the church property becomes a small, energetic stadium. Pastor Nathan and his wife Amy enjoy attending games and meeting the players and the coaches. Offering the field is one more way First Baptist gives back to Oxford.
Sunday worship begins at 10:30 a.m., and everyone is invited. The church keeps an atmosphere that is welcoming and family oriented, especially during the holidays.
The Christmas Eve service at 4 p.m. is one of the most cherished traditions. Children stay in the auditorium with their parents, and the service focuses on the meaning of Christmas. Pastor Nathan describes it as a celebration of “Christ coming to Earth to save mankind and offer salvation to everyone.” The music includes the classic hymns many people grew up with. Silent Night is one of Pastor Nathan’s favorites. The evening closes with a candlelight ceremony, each flame passed from one person to the next, filling the room with a soft glow. It is a moment for reflection and gratitude, and the church offers it to the entire community.
First Baptist remains connected to Oxford beyond worship. Pastor Nathan has attended chamber breakfasts and the Coffee Connect gatherings. He enjoys these meetings for the chance to build friendships and stay engaged with local leaders and business owners.
In every way, First Baptist Church of Oxford strives to live out its purpose. It opens its doors, its fields, and its arms to the people around it. In a town like Oxford, these acts of neighborliness strengthen the entire community.
