Alaina Sullivan of Sullivan Law Office has a simple mission. She wants families to be protected before they face moments of crisis. Her work focuses on estate planning and probate, and she helps clients prepare wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and medical documents that guide loved ones when someone cannot speak for themselves.

Many people believe they do not need an estate plan because they are not wealthy, but Alaina says this is one of the biggest misconceptions she hears. As she puts it, “Everyone needs something in place. People think they do not own enough to need a plan, but that is not true at all.” She explains that once you own a home, have savings, or have children, you need documents that make your wishes clear. Even young adults should consider a power of attorney so that someone can speak for them if an emergency happens. “Just because your child turns eighteen does not mean you can speak for them anymore,” she says.

Alaina also sees how difficult the probate process can be for families who did not prepare. Without a trust or a clear set of documents, loved ones must go to court before they can sell a home or access a bank account. “It is more expensive to go through court than it is to have the documents created in the first place,” she says. She wants her clients to avoid that stress and to feel secure knowing their families will not face unnecessary hurdles.

Her own family needed encouragement to complete their documents. “My parents did not want to do it, so I finally sat them down and said I was going to write theirs because I would be the one who had to execute it,” she says with a smile. She sees that same hesitation in many of the people she helps, but she also sees how relieved they feel once everything is in place.

Alaina has become a familiar face in Oxford. She joined the Chamber soon after moving to town in 2016 and found her first connections there. She attends Coffee Connects, luncheons, and the Christmas Parade, where she often walks with her daughter who dances with Center Stage. Her business sponsors a shelf at Oxford/Orion FISH Food Pantry, and each October she and her daughter run a muffin mix drive for local families. They also participate in the giving tree at St. Joseph, a tradition they look forward to every year.

What Alaina loves most about Oxford is the sense of community. “My parents laugh because when they visit, I seem to know someone in every business downtown. That is what makes this place special,” she says. Oxford welcomed her from the start, and she is grateful for the chance to give back.
