How Joseph Vitale Built a Wealth Firm Around Faith, Fiduciary Duty, and the Full Financial Picture
Joseph Vitale approaches financial planning from a different starting point. Before investments or market returns enter the conversation, he focuses on the long-term view: taxes, healthcare, legacy, faith, and the people those decisions affect.
For more than 20 years, Vitale led what was formerly known as American Retirement Advisors. Last year, the firm rebranded to Vitale Wealth Management, reflecting a broader philosophy. “We’re more of a holistic financial planning firm,” Vitale said. “We don’t just do investments. We do everything.” That shift goes far beyond a name. Vitale Wealth Management creates 30-year roadmaps that extend past market performance.
The firm focuses on tax strategies, Roth conversions, tax-free income planning, long-term care, Medicaid planning, and asset preservation, areas many advisors don’t address. “Some advisors are not allowed to talk about taxes,” he said. “We get involved with CPAs to make sure we’re maximizing income now and staying in a lower tax bracket long term.”
Vitale is a Master Elite Advisor with Ed Slott Elite and part of the Stonewood Inner Circle, credentials that support his deep focus on proactive tax planning. “Our whole goal is to help people keep, preserve, and hand down what they’ve earned,” he said. “And if they leave something to their kids, it is as tax free as possible.”
Clients are drawn to the firm’s fiduciary commitment and its Christian principles. Vitale explained, “We put our cross out in the front and are very proud of it. Our principles are very important to us too, which is evident with all the referrals that we get and people that we work with.” While the firm is founded on Christian values, it welcomes and serves clients of all faiths and backgrounds, focusing on doing what is best for each individual.
Being a fiduciary means full transparency about fees, compensation, and recommendations. “There are times I’ll recommend an annuity,” Vitale explained. “But I always explain why. Other times, I’ll say someone should never own one. It’s not for everybody.”
That discipline extends to debt and financial readiness. Vitale follows the Dave Ramsey SmartVestor principles: “Pay yourself first. Make sure you don’t invest before you pay off everything. You have to have principles. I want people out of debt. I want people prepared for retirement with no issues.”
Community involvement is another cornerstone of the firm. Vitale Wealth Management hosts client events from golf outings to baseball games, including an annual Christmas party for nearly 200 clients. Many gatherings are tied to giving back. “We partner with local charities like Santa’s Cupboard,” Vitale said. “This year we raised $4,000 and matched it, so $8,000 total was donated. That helps make sure kids in shelters and hospitals don’t go without Christmas gifts. That’s really special.”
With offices in Sterling Heights, Metamora, and Saginaw, the firm serves clients in Oxford and Lake Orion. Vitale describes the business as large enough to provide comprehensive services, but small enough for personal attention. “Our clients are our family,” he said.
Supported by fellow advisor Alex Wagner and a dedicated staff, Vitale Wealth Management continues to expand while staying rooted in its values. Looking ahead, Vitale remains focused on helping clients plan not just for the next market cycle, but for the next generation. “Fiduciaries should be looking 30 years ahead,” he said. “That’s what we do.”
