Pioneer Door Company: Thirty Years of Showing Up for the Community
Taylor Shick hesitated for a moment before speaking. Then she smiled. “We’re family owned. We’ve been here for 30 years,” she said. It was simple, but it carried the weight of three decades of early mornings, weekend calls, and a community that had come to rely on them.
Greg Shick had been installing garage doors for most of his life, residential and commercial alike, and spoke with the steady confidence of someone who had built something brick by brick. “We try to serve the community the best we can and get out as quickly as possible to help,” he said. The shop behind him was full of openers, panels, commercial entry doors, and the memories of countless jobs completed.
Kyle stepped forward next. He echoed the same spirit his father and sister carried. Commercial doors, gates, the big jobs that needed more than mechanical skill. They needed trust. And the Shick family had earned plenty of that.
The conversation shifted to what they had been doing for the community. At first they shrugged it off, and then the stories started to come out. They had donated doors to Oxford Parks and Recreation. They support Oxford and Lake Orion athletics, including the hockey team whose banner now hangs proudly in the shop. Taylor laughed as she recalled how often someone came in asking for a little help with a fundraiser, and how often the answer was yes.
Greg mentioned Camp Oakland next. Kyle’s wife (Tara Shick) worked at Camp Oakland, and Kyle volunteered his time to teach the Camp Oakland kids how to use tools and talk to them about vocational jobs. Additionally, Pioneer Door donated tools, and has donated to Camp Oakland fundraising events in the past. “They have a great program,” he said. “They try to help the kids any way they can, so we try to help too.”
They talked about the Chamber events they have missed in the past, and promised “to do better.” The shop is often busy and the days can be long, but networking sounds easier when Jenine Sparks, the new Executive Director of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, describes it.
The family business stands on work that is reliable, steady, and done with pride. After thirty years, it was clear that the Pioneer name is built on more than garage doors, it is built on service, community, and the quiet way a family shows up for the people around them.
