Oxford Community Schools is more than a school district. It is a cornerstone of the community, shaped by resilience and a shared commitment to student success. Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Tonya Milligan, the district continues to move forward with purpose, transparency, and heart.

Now in her second year as superintendent, Dr. Milligan speaks passionately about Oxford and the people who make it special. “I love Oxford. The community is incredibly supportive of the schools. Our families are incredible,” she says. Dr. Milligan has made her home within the district, a decision she describes as “a joy” thanks to how welcoming the community has been.

Oxford’s educators and staff are central to that experience. “The staff that we have is incredibly dedicated to our students and goes above and beyond. They’re really focused on the needs of the students and meeting their needs,” Dr. Milligan explains. She calls it an honor and a privilege to work alongside professionals who consistently put students first.

The district continues to carry the weight of a tragedy that occurred four years ago, a reality that still impacts students, families, and staff. “The trauma that our students and their families experience to this day is significant,” Dr. Milligan says. As a result, Oxford Community Schools places strong emphasis on socioemotional supports, safety resources, and student safety protocols. Academics remain a priority as well, particularly after disruptions caused by the tragedy and the pandemic. “We’re working very hard to give them the support that they need and ensure that academically they are finding success,” she adds.

Financial transparency and responsible stewardship are central to Oxford Community Schools as the district looks toward renewing its operating millage in 2026. Dr. Milligan explains that the millage is part of Michigan’s school funding structure and does not apply to primary homeowners. After last year’s proposal did not pass, the district listened closely to community feedback and is improving how it communicates the need and use of these funds. Without renewal, Oxford would face a significant budget shortfall affecting student supports, safety, facilities, and academic programs. By prioritizing efficiency and accountability, the district aims to earn community trust and demonstrate that renewing the operating millage is critical to sustaining strong schools and student success.

Oxford Community Schools is also looking ahead through its strategic plan and Portrait of a Graduate initiative, which defines the characteristics every Oxford graduate should possess by the time they graduate. Dr. Milligan emphasizes the importance of business input, explaining the goal is to prepare students to become confident, capable future employees.

The district offers exceptional programs, from arts to career pathways, including an EMT program in partnership with the Oxford Fire Department, dual enrollment, and the Oxford Schools Early College (OSEC) program, which allows students to earn college credits or even an associate degree while still in high school. “Our goal is to ensure our kids have options for the future and that the needs of the community are supported,” Dr. Milligan says.

Above all, Oxford Community Schools values community voice. “Community voice is the most important aspect of our work,” Dr. Milligan emphasizes. Through listening tours, surveys, and open conversations, the district remains committed to aligning its work with the hopes and vision of the Oxford community it proudly serves.
