Michigan United Credit Union – Banking With Community in Mind
.
For Jennifer Kangeter, Michigan United Credit Union isn’t just about accounts and loans – it’s about connecting with the communities it serves. Formed in 2021 through the merger of Lakes Community Credit Union, Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union, Metro North Credit Union, and Unity Credit Union, the credit union now operates nine branches across Michigan.
.
“We’re mainly known for our auto loans,” Kangeter says. “People come to us because we keep our rates low and have strong programs with local dealers. It’s all about helping our members get the best possible deal.”
.
Auto loans are just the beginning. Michigan United Credit Union also offers mortgages, CDs, credit cards, personal loans, and standard checking and savings accounts. “As a not-for-profit, everything we do is designed to benefit our members,” Kangeter explains. “That’s the key difference between credit unions and traditional banks.”
.
Community involvement is central to the credit union’s mission. Each branch supports local initiatives. The Lake Orion branch, for example, runs donation drives for the Oxford and Orion Food Pantries. “Each branch gets involved in something unique for its community,” Kangeter says. “We also participate in family events, chamber activities, and scholarship programs to give back to local students.”
.
Shared branching is another feature that sets Michigan United apart. Members can visit any participating credit union to deposit or withdraw funds without extra fees. “It’s about convenience and connection,” Kangeter notes. “Even when our members travel, they have access to their accounts without paying extra.”
.
The credit union also offers practical services such as coin machines for deposits and regular educational events. “We’re hosting a fraud seminar at our Auburn Hills location in March, and we also do shred days at many branches,” Kangeter says. “It’s all part of helping members protect their money and stay informed.”
.
Kangeter emphasizes the importance of personal relationships. “We’re here to answer questions, guide people through big financial decisions, and support the neighborhoods where our members live and work,” she says. “From auto loans to community programs, it’s all about service and connection.”
.
With Michigan United Credit Union, it is about more than just transactions. As a member owned, not for profit credit union, the focus is always on helping people, not making profits. The goal is to build trust, give back, and support families across the communities it serves. As Kangeter says, “We want our members to know we are more than a financial institution. We are a partner in the community.”
