A Journey of Welcome and Hope: Pastor Ben Spaulding at Journey Lutheran Church
Since arriving in Oxford in August of 2025, Pastor Ben Spaulding has quickly embraced his role at Journey Lutheran Church and Early Childhood Center. “It has been a joy and a privilege getting to know the people at Journey,” Spaulding says, “and the families and staff who give so much of their time, talents, and treasures.”
Journey Lutheran’s mission shapes everything it does. “Our mission is to welcome, empower, and send everyone on a journey with Jesus,” Spaulding explains. “We welcome everyone who is seeking truth and grace.” The church focuses on biblical literacy and gospel fluency so members can serve others, bless the community, and share what he calls “the story of God’s saving love.” Discipleship, he adds, happens at every stage of life and in everyday spaces, “where we live, work, and play.”
Originally from Armada, Michigan, Spaulding returned home after six years serving as a deployed missionary in the Houston area. “My role was to start house churches and work with local business leaders,” he says, “creating places where people could share their struggles, receive encouragement, and find peace in the ordinary rhythms of life.” He says he is grateful to be back in Michigan and part of the Oxford community.
Journey Lutheran offers two Sunday worship services. The 8:30am service follows a classic style with traditional hymns, while the 11am service is contemporary and led by worship director Katie Cartwright. Between services, the church hosts Bible study and Sunday school for all ages, along with coffee, snacks, and fellowship.
This Christmas Eve, Journey Lutheran will host three candlelight services at 2pm, 4pm, and 8pm. “We slowly and steadily read the Christmas story,” Spaulding says, “pausing to sing carols, pray for our community and the world, and close in candlelight.” He describes the service as peaceful, reflective, and open to all. “Anyone is welcome,” he says. “We invite our whole community to celebrate the good news of Jesus’ birth.”
Spaulding has also joined the Oxford Chamber of Commerce board, inspired by former Journey pastor Matt Schuler. “He shared how meaningful the relationships were and how much of a blessing it was to serve the people who help make Oxford run,” Spaulding says. With experience in event planning, he looks forward to partnering with local leaders and businesses.
After just a few months in Oxford, Spaulding says the sense of care is unmistakable. “This is a full and joyous community,” he reflects. “I’m excited to be here, to get to know people, and to see our community grow in love for one another.”
