Counelis Farm Bureau Agency is more than an insurance office in downtown Oxford. It is a business shaped by local involvement, long-term relationships, and a strong commitment to the community it serves. Owner Melisa Counelis has been part of the Oxford area for years, both as a resident and a business leader. As a parent with children in the local school system, Counelis feels a personal connection to the community’s successes and challenges.

Counelis opened her Farm Bureau agency in 2017 and has since grown it into a trusted, woman-owned and operated business in the Village of Oxford. “I’m a long-term resident and a long-term business owner here in the village,” she said.

Through Farm Bureau Insurance, a Michigan-only company, Counelis Farm Bureau Agency advises and assists clients in finding coverage that fits their lives and businesses. The agency offers a wide range of insurance options, including auto, home, life, farm, and business insurance. “We advise and assist with finding plans that are appropriate for our clients,” Counelis explained. “Farm Bureau being Michigan-only is absolutely outstanding. It really promotes local.”

That local focus extends beyond insurance. Counelis is actively involved with the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, serving as a long-time chamber ambassador, and regularly attends the Chamber’s 9:15 a.m. Oxford Power Networking Group. Additionally, she works closely with the Downtown Development Authority and helps manage the farmers market at Seymour Lake Park in partnership with Oxford Township Parks and Recreation.

“We are heavily integrated within the community,” Counelis said. “We support local sports teams, sponsor park programs in both Oxford and Lake Orion, and help with local charities.” The agency has also sponsored community events such as the Oxford Christmas parade and a recent high school theater production.

Counelis believes strongly in supporting fellow local businesses. “I’ll pay more money to support one of my local people here in town rather than go online or somewhere else,” she said. “It’s important that we support each other.”

Counelis is always happy to advocate for local businesses. “I’m here for my community,” she said. “I try to always be a smiling face and offer help where I can.”
